FOL History
Almost forty years ago, a small group of people joined together to form the Friends of the West Hollywood Library (FOL). Our goal was to help the Library provide the best possible service to a community of writers, artists, business people, school children, home-bound sick and elderly and everyone who loves books. W
e are now a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

What We Do
The FOL strives to help the West Hollywood Library in every way we can. Through our on-going Used Book Sale at the Library and through our Annual Fall Book and Bake Sale and Spring Book Sale as well as through memberships, dues and donations, we are able to raise money to give to the Library for much-needed items that are not covered in its allotted LA County budget.

These items include, among other things: purchasing books, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, books-on-tape and videotapes not available through the County Library's collection; subsidizing children's special programming, summer reading programs and essay contests; funding library displays, adult cultural programs and book and film discussions.

We also sponsor the annual "Big Read" programming where members of the community all read the same book (last year was Rudolfo Anaya's "Bless Me, Ultioma", and this year was F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby") and attend book review groups, panel discussions, related and dramatic performances, etc.  This year, we provided 700 books — 400 to the students at Fairfax High School so they could participate, and 300 to the community, including in Russian and Spanish, as well as large print and English.

In addition, we actively encourage our members and others to support legislative action on behalf of the Library and to support the City of West Hollywood's efforts to build a much-needed new library for our community.

The structure of the new library is well underway, having broken ground in June, 2009; and it's due to be open and running by October, 2011. The new library will be FABULOUS, housing numerous special collections (LGBT, Russian language, West Hollywood local history, etc.), meeting rooms and state-of-the-art computer facilities.

And the BIG news is that the new library will include a book store for the Friends of the West Hollywood Library so that we can raise donations year-round and have a permanent location!
